Christopher Columbus, during his second voyage to the West Indies in 1493, named the island Isla de San Martin. Though claiming it as a Spanish territory, Columbus never actually landed there. The French and the Dutch, on the other hand, both coveted the island. Today, the island is shared by France (the Collectivity of Saint Martin occupies the northern two thirds of the island and neighboring islets) and the Netherlands as a constituent country (Sint Maarten occupies the southern third of the island).
